First dates are notoriously excruciating – there are so many things to worry about for both people that it’s a wonder that any of them are a success! You will be concerned about what time to show up, where you should go together, what you will talk about – it’s a complete minefield. Very often, the nerves can get on top of you, and that’s when you find yourself making common mistakes such as talking too fast, spilling your drink and saying the wrong thing. One thing that you shouldn’t have to worry about is what you are going to wear. If you are meeting a man for the first time, make sure you get your outfit sorted well in advance so that you can strike one of your worries off the list straight away. Here’s how to plan the perfect first date outfit:

Make It Appropriate
The most important thing to remember when you are planning your first date outfit is that you have to make sure that it’s appropriate to the surroundings. So this means finding out where you are going to go. For example, if you know that you are going to a posh restaurant for dinner then you’ll know to wear something suitably glamorous. Similarly, if you are going to go for a stroll together then you won’t want to be wearing your highest stilettos. Plan your outfit around where you will be going and you shouldn’t go too far wrong.
Less Is More
Most people opt for something that errs on the side of conservative for their first date. Unless you dress alternatively all of the time, it’s probably better to stick with something that is pretty safe. Normally a plain skirt and a pretty top will look great – but if you choose a dress then don’t go over the top with it. Instead, choose something that is classical in design with not too many frills. You don’t want to look like you have tried too hard – so if your dress is slightly casual then you will come across as casual too (even if you are a bag of nerves on the inside!)
Don’t forget that accessories really make or break an outfit, so take time to decide which accessories you will wear with your outfit. A shawl can look really classy and it will also serve as an extra layer should you get cold. Choose your jewelry to match the outfit – a timeless pair of diamond stud earrings will go beautifully with any look. Make sure your shoes are comfortable as well as stylish.
Finally, you need to finish your look with the perfect makeup. Again, less is definitely more here so go easy on the war paint! Choose neutral tones and add a touch of lip gloss for a dazzling smile. Keep a hand mirror in your bag so that you can check your face every now and again.
The most important thing to remember is that you should relax and enjoy yourself. Don’t pretend to be somebody that you’re not, or get too bogged down with nerves. You never know – this could be the one!
